Population of Costa Rica

The population of Costa Rica is around 4 million people. Approximately 50% of the population lives in the central valley in or around the capital city of San Jose.

The population of San Jose itself accounts for close to 1 million people, while Alajuela, San Ramon, and Grecia and Heredia also located in the same central valley account for about another 500,000 people. Other large cities and their populations are Puntarenas, 95,000; Cartago, 110,000; and. Limón, 70,000

28% of the population is from 0-14 years of age, 66% from 15-64 years old and 6% are 65 years or older. Costa Rica's population growth rate is approx 1.4% per year.

It is believed that well over 100,000 North Americans now live in Costa Rica, although I not been able to verify the exact number. With the amount of new development and tourism and many American companies now doing business in Costa Rica , it wouldn’t surprise me if the number has grown significantly in recent years.
